What does your digital footprint say?

footprint

The definition of a digital footprint is: the information about a particular person that exists on the internet as a result of their online activity.

Have you ever thought about what your digital footprint would say about you or maybe even better yet what your child’s digital footprint would look like. That is actually a little frightening to think about . Kids these days post about every aspect of their life. The good, the bad, and the ugly.

A good start to identifying your digital foot print is to google your name and the names of your family members. That is a very eye opening thing to do. It is amazing what Google knows about you, your occupation, address and associated family members.

The next thing you should do is go through your privacy settings on your social media sites. Sometimes the settings button is tough to find but it is worth taking the time to ensure that your security levels are set to the highest level that you are personally comfortable with.

While you are on your social media sites you should take a look at your previous posts. Take a minute to scroll back through time and review your posts. You may decide a post that was absolutely hysterical in the moment maybe reflecting back is not really not something to share.

Moving forward before you post anything ask yourself ” Do i really want this out on the WWW forever” if the answer is no then do not post it. Social media sites promote that they are “private”. Res assured some of these sites such as google plus will be hacked into and there will be data breaches sharing personal information.
